The Shadowserver Foundation is a nonprofit organization working altruistically behind the scenes to make the internet more secure for everyone. Shadowserver provides access to the most timely, critical Internet security data, free of charge.
Since its founding in 2004, it has become one of the world’s leading resources for Internet security reporting and malicious activity investigation.
The Shadowserver logo icon is dynamic and bold. It is a symbol of the altruistic do-gooder. The yellow outer shape is a representation of light being cast — actively exposing hidden security threats. With its forward tilt and sharp lines, the icon is reminiscent of a modern hero on a mission for good.
The original Shadowserver logo was busy and confusing. The icon was blurring the line between villain and hero, and the logotype was cluttered and difficult to read. Neither mark demonstrated professionalism to Shadowserver’s target audiences.
Through an initial discovery process, the findings suggested that a new brand direction should focus on Shadowserver’s lead role in lighting the way to a more secure internet. After some concepeting, it was discovered that there was too much internal brand equity to lose the silhouette figure. But the figure needed to embody leadership, lighting the way, and should feel like the good guy.
The color palette developed consists of black, white, and a rich yellow. Various shades of gray are used to complement the primary colors. Yellow is a representation of light, and it is used sparingly to create interest for calls to action, web links, and buttons.
